McLEAN, VA - The ship you see is cruising near the Panama Canal, but not through. The next photo shows how each ship literally squeezes through the Canal. The following graphic shows how a transit works. The best time to cruise Panama is in February when daily temperatures are in the 70s. In the USA they're in the 30s.
Every ship barely slides through the Panama Canal. Man made walls keep each ship upright stopping it from tilting over too far one side (listing) and sinking. When you're in a Balcony cruising the Panama Canal it seems you can reach out over the Balcony to touch the man made walls with your bare hands. But don't try!
To complete a transit a ship first approaches the Canal entrance at sea level, enters the first lock and waits until enough water is pumped under it to be raised up to another lock. More water is pumped into that lock raising the ship up yet again to another lock and so it goes lock by lock until the ship sits high on top of land. Water is then drained out of each lock until the ship is lowered again to sea level and sails away. Transits happen all day every day in Panama between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.  It takes  8 hours for any  ship to transit the Canal.  This cruise ship will clear the Canal, but returns to the Atlantic. The Beyond does not go out to the Pacific. It makes a U-turn in Gatun Lake on top of Panama and descends again into the Atlantic sailing back to Ft. Lauderdale.
To finalize each  transit a Panamanian dock worker pulls on ropes to help keep the ship upright as it's lowered into the ocean. Or you may see donkeys on both sides of the Canal pulling ropes too guiding the ship through.  No captain of any cruise or cargo ship is allowed to steer his ship through the Canal. Only Panamanian ship Pilots are allowed to do this job to avoid accidents. The minimum toll each ship pays Panama to pass through its Canal is $1 million U.S. Dollars. In 2025 this cruise will cost you personally much less. Your personal toll for this transit in included in your cruise fare. Here are details:
