In the 12th Century Irish warriors fought off vicious Normans to protect Ireland. The Normans, who were really marauding Vikings, became Christians after seizing England. But they still were hell bent on taking over Ireland too. Yet the brave Irish refused to relent. One way they did so was to pound into the ground huge, wooden stakes (called pales or poles) marking their homeland boundaries and forbidding Normans to pass entry. The heathen Normans completely ignored any such markers and without any sense of remorse would "Go Beyond the Pale" killing, burning, robbing and stealing from every village in Ireland. They did so "without any bounds of morality at all." Today when a person or organization behaves without any sense of decency we say, "They went beyond the pale." It's not a pail of water, it's a huge wooden stick pounded into the ground declaring a boundary. Across rural Ireland still today you can see mailboxes attached to Irish pales of yore.
