Dutch sailors built windmills here because steady winds meant steady operating mills. Dutch sailors, and the tradesmen who followed, copied Spanish pirates who buried pillaged loot throughout the distant islands. Pirates knew these sites were so isolated they'd have years to retrieve all their ill gotten gains. Likewise, the far flung islands gave law abiding Dutchmen more time to set up legal businesses and a government structure from Holland to protect them politically. Winds blowing across the world's oceans historically were called "trade winds" because they stimulated trade between nations by moving ships. They do the same today, especially with cruise ships!

Total population for the ABC Islands is near 400,000 with annual, daily temps at 80 degrees. In October dress for summer. Bring a hooded, light jacket for quick afternoon showers. Pack light.

Seafaring travelers in the 1900s found the ABC Islands irresistible with aqua blue waters, white sandy beaches and 80 degree daily temperatures, not to mention unlimited sources of fresh fish. Plus the islanders conducted honest trade. Today seafarers, including cruisers, visit the ABCs for all the same reasons and because (drum roll please) they're haunted!#@

The islands of Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire are haunted. But not by pirates. They're haunted by a lonely woman, a night watchmen and confused soldiers. They've been there 100s of years and won't go.

Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao all have ghosts, witches and goblins roaming about even after they've been dead and buried hundreds of years. They're looking for lost treasures, lost love and lost ships. Aruba's ghosts haunt the ruins of a gold mine where miners died fighting off thieves stealing their gold. In Bonaire is a haunted Lighthouse whose former keeper died under mysterious circumstances. Yet, each night he turns on the tower light emitting eerie sounds and waiting for ships lost at sea to finally return. But Curacao has the most famous ghost of all. She's known as, 'The White Lady.' She roams the harbor of Willemstad heart broken searching for her love who sailed away to marry another woman in Europe. At Fort Amsterdam on Curacao tourists claim to hear the rapid footsteps of soldiers looking for a way out. These stories reveal the rich history of the ABC Islands. They lure travelers at Halloween time when it's not hot, not windy and not crowded.

When in Curacao be sure to order a 'White Lady Cocktail' paying tribute to the most famous Ghost on all ABC islands. It's made of gin, cointreau of triple sec (orange liquor) with squeezes of fresh lemon juice. Garnish it with a lemon or cherry. Or better yet, with Candy Corn for Halloween!
